Access: Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation

As part of Access, students can choose to participate in a variety of programs to suit their skills and interest. Gordon, the mechanic overseeing the work, said:

"After the 2nd World War, there was a shortage of motor vehicles; particularly performance/sports cars. It became a common practice to convert a family sedan into a hillclimber or sports car. This involved stripping off the 4-door body; moving the engine back from the front of the car about 600mm (to allow better weight distribution); move the engine down about 300mm (for a better centre of gravity); the suspension was lowered for better handling, and finally, a lightweight (often handmade) body was put on to improve power to weight ratio.

The vehicle we are currently working, as a part of the Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation course, at Redlands College is a 1939 Riley; with parts fitted from various models all the way up to the 1950s. Our aim is to restore the vehicle to a roadworthy standard in its racing form. The vehicle is very rundowns because of its racing involvement (it was raced up until the late 1960s). To date we have restored and modified the front and rear suspension and shock absorbers; we have fitted a re-conditioned rack and pinion steering unit; we have installed a collapsible steering column (the previous steering column was a straight tubular steel spear aimed straight at the heart of the driver); we have reconditioned all of the brake slave cylinders and linings, and we have grafted a rear-end chassis section in to replace the previously damaged section.

Our aim this year with the Automotive students at Redlands College is to convert the braking system to a dual-circuit system; convert the electronics from positive earth to negative earth; finish the steering column and steering wheel; get the engine running effectively, and (if possible) replace the current engine with a RMB 2.5ltr twin-cam later model engine."
