Bronze Kayaking Trip

Tuesday 14 May 2019 by Outdoor Education @ Redlands

Some of our students who are participating in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award completed a kayaking trip recently. This four day trip was an Adventurous Journey for their Bronze Award.

DofE Bronze Kayaking _7After completing a  first aid course along with some kayak and camping skills training last term they were ready to paddle the length of South Stradbroke Island, camping each night. The students developed their kayaking and navigational skills very quickly which made for a great experience. The group planned ahead for each day ensuring that they paddled to their next destination at the best time based on weather forecasts and using the tide charts. They even considered getting up very early on Anzac day to make it to their campsite in time for a service. After much discussion, they decided to leave at a later time which made their day more enjoyable (and also ensured an appropriate amount of sleep was had).

Highlights of the trip include a night time kayak (including time to remember those who have defended our country) and watching the sun set and rise. The wind picked up on the final day and it was great to see the group use the skills they had developed over the previous three days to ensure they got to their final destination as a group.
