Co-Curricular Chess

The Redlands College Chess teams have been very busy.  While last term we learnt about Bulldozer and Steamroller Checkmates, this term we have been learning about different openings.  To date we have explored the Ruy Lopez (or Spanish Opening), how that can be countered by the Berlin Defence and also the English opening.  The English opening is a little unusual as its first move is C4.

Our Senior players returned to participate in the third round of the Brisbane Inter-Secondary Schools Competition on August 6 at the Anglican Church Grammar School.  Team 1 had come third in C Division previously and so were promoted to B Division this time.  They competed very well and despite dominating board one and leading the table for four rounds, they ultimately came 6th out of 16 teams.  This is a fantastic effort for a team of three.  (Teams usually consist of four members).  Team 2 were new to the competition but also competed really well, dominating board one for three rounds and coming 9th out of 20 teams.  Congratulations to both teams!
