College Rules

These rules are designed for the general good of the College community. At the same time, they will provide guidelines which will help you to behave in a way that you, your friends and the College approve of. These rules are not meant to be totally prescriptive and, in all areas not covered, common-sense should prevail.

Within the context of home and personal social life, the responsibility rests with your parents to act as they see fit.  It is hoped that they will support at home, the standards expected at the College.

Respect for God

In all aspects of your life, you should be seeking to glorify God who made you and to develop a relationship with Him. The following guidelines should assist you in that goal.

Respect for Yourself

You cannot respect others if you do not first respect yourself, your body, your mind, your possessions and your surroundings.  It is important that you develop a satisfactory balance between sleep and wakefulness; among academic, leisure and physical activities; between planned and free time.  As far as the College is concerned, a respect for yourself may be demonstrated outwardly by the following:

  1. In both language and conduct your manner should not be offensive to others.

  2. You should complete set homework and work diligently in class in order to facilitate your learning.

  3. Your school uniform must be worn correctly and kept neat and clean.

  4. Noticeable changes in hair colour are not permitted.  Hair must have a natural look and must not appear to be dyed, coloured, streaked etc. Boys must wear a conservative college cut with fringes above the eyebrows, hair above the collar and trimmed around the ears. Girls are expected to have fringes no longer than the eyebrows and for hair longer than collar length, to be tied back with a plain blue ribbon. No student should have hair hanging in their face.

  5. You are not to wear visible jewellery of any kind except a wristwatch. Girls may wear one pair of plain silver or gold sleepers or studs in the earlobe. Other visible piercings are not permitted under any circumstances. Nail polish or make-up are not permitted.

  6. You may not sit on port racks or railings, nor may you climb onto roofs or other parts of buildings, walkways or fences.

  7. You may not be in possession of tobacco at school or at school functions nor going to or from school.

  8. You are not permitted to be in possession of alcohol products on the College premises, or at College activities, or in any public place.

  9. Possession of drugs, narcotics and hallucinogens is absolutely forbidden. This is illegal and strict action will be taken by the College in the event of a breach.

  10. Students who consume alcohol and/or illegal substances at any event where they are identified as a student of Redlands College will be expelled.

Respect for Others

Besides respecting yourself, it is important that you show respect for other people - your parents, teachers, fellow students and students from other schools. This includes, among other things:

  1. Extending due courtesy to all teachers, fellow students and visitors to the classroom.

  2. Politely acknowledging a known adult who is met out of doors.

  3. Offering help and guidance to visitors to the College.

  4. Standing for adults in public transport.

  5. Keeping your voice and conversation in public to a tone and to topics which are acceptable to others around you.

  6. Displaying excellent manners in your contact with all adults and students.

  7. Waiting quietly (in two lines for all years except 11 and 12) outside classrooms and moving quietly about the College, when necessary, during class.

  8. Obeying the code of behaviour in the library.

  9. Walking - not running, on verandas and walkways.

  10. Avoiding and preventing bullying and rough play.

  11. Reporting, at once to the nearest teacher, any accident or damage involving yourself or other students.

  12. Courteously, and with good will, obeying instructions given by staff, school captains and senior student leaders.

  13. Working quietly in class so as not to disrupt the learning of others.

  14. Avoiding physical displays of affection or constant isolated boy-girl companionship. School is not the place for this behaviour.

  15. Spray on deodorants can cause danger for asthmatics when used in the change rooms. They are not to be brought to school.

Respect for Property

Buildings, furniture and equipment in the College are expensive to provide and maintain. They are provided for your benefit. Money spent repairing damaged property cannot be used to provide new equipment.

  1. You are not to interfere with or remove any property belonging to others or to the College.

  2. You are required to mark all clothing and other belongings with your name, and to leave them in your bag or locker when not in use.

  3. Large sums of money should not be brought to school. Valuables which for some reason must be brought to school should be left with the Student Receptionist in Administration.  During sport or other such activities valuables should be left with a responsible person.

  4. You are required to have a Redlands College bag marked with your name and class or telephone number. The bag should be free of all graffiti, as should all of your school equipment.

  5. All bags must be left outside classrooms, neatly stacked on the racks provided for your form class.

  6. Food and drink (other than plain water) must not be taken into, or consumed in, classrooms, except for an activity supervised by a teacher and approved by the relevant Head of School.

  7. Bins are provided for litter.  Therefore, do not drop litter around the grounds and, if you come across any, pick it up and put it in a bin.

  8. Chewing gum is not allowed on school property or at school activities.

  9. Dangerous objects - knives, matches, lighters, shanghais, etc. - are not to be brought to school.

  10. Liquid paper and felt pens are not to be brought to school.

  11. Sports equipment should be used properly and must be returned at the end of the session.

Absences

  1. If you are away from school because of sickness or some unforeseen circumstance, a telephone message should be left by a parent with reception before 9:00 am.  You must also ask your parents to write a note for you to give to your form teacher on the day that you next attend school.

  2. If the absence extends beyond 3 days, your parents should contact the relevant Head of School.

  3. If you know in advance that you wish to be absent from school for an approved appointment (medical, dental, tests, etc.) you must bring a note to the relevant Head of School before the event, requesting permission to be absent and giving the time and reason.

Bounds

  1. After arrival at school you may not leave the grounds for any reason at all, without the permission of the Headmaster or Head of School.  If you do gain permission to leave, the ‘sign-out’ book in the reception area must be completed by the person collecting you.  You may not leave a classroom without the permission of the teacher in charge of the class.  Notes requesting permission to leave early must be brought to the office before 8:30 am.

  2. You may not use a classroom without the written permission of a teacher who will then directly supervise you.

  3. The laboratories are out of bounds unless a teacher is present.

  4. The pool is out of bounds unless an adult with a bronze life saving medallion is present.

  5. The creek and its banks are out of bounds at all times.

  6. The car park area between the buildings and the railway fence is out of bounds.  This includes the loading bay at the rear of the library, and the car park at the rear of the Sports Centre.

The preceding rules and procedures are binding on all students while they are enrolled at the College.
