See how we are going so far….

Opens

Over the course of last week the Opens Netball girls had the opportunity to compete in the Gold Coast Netball Carnival hosted at Southport over four grueling days.  This event attracts school teams from as far afield as New Zealand, Western Australia and South Australia.  Upon arrival the place was buzzing with hundreds of excited players for the four days of netball ahead the sky was crystal clear and the opening ceremony saw the respective national anthems sung in English, Aboriginal and Māori.

Day one saw the girls take the court, encouraging each other throughout the pool matches; some were easy, others not so easy.  From the pool matches the team ended up in division 2.  By the end of day one for competition points the girls finished top of the table with two tough games remaining to place in final.  The first was against Mt Aspiring College NZ, it was hard fought with turnovers happening at both ends of the court and on the final whistle the game was 18-18.  The final game before finals saw us come up against second on the ladder Southport State High School at half time we were locked up 12 all, with tired players and a few 50-50 calls not going our way we had our first loss pushing us back to second place for finals.

Then to sudden death finals (2 v 3) against the Aboriginal Kangaroos team.  The score was close in the first half with Redlands College up by one goal but the Kangaroos dug in in the second half and managed to turn the ball over a few times to secure themselves a spot in the finals, placing us third in division for the event.  Given the quality of the competition the girls should be extremely proud of their achievement. Firm friendships have been formed and this event was excellent preparation for the upcoming districts finals for the team.

Year 6/7 Gala Day Netball

Year 7 Gala Day brought together a very enthusiastic group of our best Middle School netballers to play against various schools in the district at Pinklands Netball courts. The sun was shining and all 14 girls were keen to test their ability against the competition.  The friendly vibe between the girls was amazing as they cheered their team-mates on from the sideline throughout the day, inspiring them to greatness.

The team remained undefeated during the 3 rounds with three easy wins leading to a semi-final against Wynnum A. The girls ended up winning this easily after stamping their superiority on the match in the first half with treasured ball possession, outstanding full court defence and accurate shooting.  The final score was an impressive 31-7.  The grand final was against archrivals Cleveland.  Each quarter was aggressively fought out, with our girls investing all their energy just to maintain possession but experiencing difficulties in making turnovers count on the scoreboard. It was again our whole team defence that shone. A massive full team four quarter effort was rewarded with a well-deserved one goal victory 16-15. Congratulations to all the girls who participated in the day and contributed to the victory. Every girl played a role in making the day so successful with their support and encouragement of each other.
