Students may choose to play or sing for many valid reasons, be it for personal enjoyment or career.
MARC offers individual tuition with specialist instrumental and vocal tutors, available to students in Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. Tuition fees apply, and are based on Music Teachers Association rates. Payment is on a term-by-term basis, paid directly to the tutor: invoices are issued by the tutors at the beginning of each term, and are payable within two weeks of issue.
Students can be prepared for AMEB and Trinity College exams if desired. Progress reports are issued each semester to parents and students.
Lessons are of half-hour duration, and for Middle and Senior School students, lesson times are rotated so that students do not miss the same classes each week. Priority for out of school time is given to Year 12, then Year 11, etc.
Parents need to allow an additional budget for the student’s tuition, in order to purchase music (note that photocopying of print music is illegal), strings, reeds, oils etc, and ongoing instrument maintenance as required.
Home Practice
Voice or instrumental tuition requires a commitment to regular daily home practice, which is essential for consolidating the learning at weekly lessons, for the student to make progress. Parental encouragement and support is vital in assisting the student to establish a consistent daily home practice routine, and is a key ingredient to their success.
Terms and Conditions for Instrumental and Vocal Tuition at Redlands College are included on the Application for Tuition form.
BEGINNER INSTRUMENTAL TUITION
Year 3: Violin, Cello
Year 5: Woodwind, Brass, Percussion
Studying a musical instrument brings demonstrated benefits in children's development – academically, and in life and society. For more information on some of the research carried out in this area, please download Four Good Reasons to Enrol Your Child in Music Lessons.
The beginner tuition programmes are an excellent opportunity for students to enrol for an initial period of lessons on an instrument appropriate for their age, without parents having to commit to purchasing an instrument (subject to availability of College rental instruments), until they are confident that their child is likely to continue their instrumental studies in the longer term.
Year 3: Violin, Cello
MARC offers a one-year beginner string tuition programme in Year 3, comprising weekly half-hour group lessons (2-6 students per group) and rental of a College instrument for that year (subject to availability: instrument rental cost $132 inc GST).
Students in the beginner string programme are committed to lessons for the full year. Beginner string students have opportunities during the year to perform as a group, at the College Open Day/Fête, the All Strings Concert, and the Kaleidoscope Concert.
Half-hour group lessons are offered, during school time (in groups of 2-6 students), and tuition fees apply (based on Music Teachers Association rates). Payment is on a term-by-term basis, paid directly to the teacher. Invoices are issued by the instrumental/vocal teachers at the beginning of each term, and are payable within two weeks of issue.
Year 5: Woodwind, Brass, Percussion
MARC offers a one-year Beginner Programme in Year 5 for brass, woodwind and percussion: Year 5 students may apply to learn flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone, tuba, or percussion.
The programme comprises weekly half-hour group lessons (up to five students per group), and rental of a College instrument for that year (subject to availability; instrument rental cost $132 inc GST); and a weekly half-hour Beginner Ensemble rehearsal (the ensemble commences in Term 2).
Students in the beginner programme are committed to lessons for the full year.
After their first term of instrumental tuition, the students ALSO participate in a half-hour Beginner Ensemble (Friday mornings at 7:40-8:15 am, commencing in Term 2), in addition to their weekly instrumental lessons. In the Ensemble, they come together to revise what they have covered in their lessons, while also gaining elementary ensemble skills in preparation for future participation in the College’s Middle School Band Programme.
For the weekly instrumental lessons, tuition fees apply (based on Music Teachers Association rates). Payment is on a term-by-term basis, paid directly to the tutor. Invoices are issued by the tutors at the beginning of each term, and are payable within two weeks of issue.
The fee for participating in the Beginner Ensemble in Terms 2-4 is $38, and will be invoiced via school fees in Term 2. The students will have performance opportunities at the annual College Fete/Open Day, All Bands Concert, and Kaleidoscope Concert.
